The Federal Benefits Open Season is the annual time period set by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in which all eligible persons may elect, change, or cancel their coverage in the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP). By Federal regulation, open seasons are held each fall, from the Monday of the second full week in November to the Monday of the second full week in December.
Once you enroll in a FEDVIP dental and/or a FEDVIP vision plan, your enrollment automatically continues each year with the existing plan options you have selected, as long as you remain eligible for the program. You do not have to re-enroll each year. Your coverage also automatically continues into your retirement.
However, if you would like to make changes to your coverage, you can do so during the annual Open Season, or if you experience a valid Qualifying Life Event (QLE) that allows changes outside of an Open Season.
Unless one of these two exceptions applies to you, you can only cancel your FEDVIP coverage during Open Season.
If you are enrolled and you take no action during Open Season (even if you meant to take action), then your coverage continues.
